Identifying Bat Species

Bat species tend to have species-unique bat echolocation calls, although there may be considerable overlap between closely related bat species.  DCA has an Anabat echolocation call recorder and during the 2017 Bat project we are recording calls from as many flying bats as possible in many habitats.  The data from these calls will then be analyzed to determine what species were present.  The following is an example of a little brown bat call:

Bat species can also be identified using genetic analysis of guano.  This is costly, but analysis is being done for significant roost sites in the province.  This was done for the Denman Old School Bat colony in 2013, where four species of bats were identified.
