Chickadee Lake

Chickadee Lake - a portrait

From their summer encampments on Baynes Sound, First Nations people likely made their way through towering firs and cedars to Chickadee Lake to fish, to gather freshwater clams and to drink of its clear, deep waters. Generations later, the lake remains a place of restoration for humans and a sanctuary for wildlife.

The largest body of open water on the Island, 35-acre Chickadee Lake serves as headwaters for the salmon-bearing Beadnell Creek system that flows into the Strait of Georgia on the east side of Denman. With its wide range of contrasting environments-water of varying depths, wet meadow, sedge marsh, alder bottom, dry banks, steep rocky outcrops-the lake and its surroundings support a rich abundance and diversity of plant and animal life.
Its history of limited human disturbance makes Chickadee a priority for conservation. (Above photo by Brian Grogan: Eagle drawing by Peter Karsten.)
